A mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide studied for inner-membrane biology.
SS-31, also known as elamipretide, is a synthetic peptide designed to concentrate inside mitochondria. It is a major reference compound in mitochondrial research.
SS-31 is a four-amino-acid peptide (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2) from the Szeto-Schiller peptide family. Its structure lets it cross cell membranes and accumulate at the inner mitochondrial membrane.
Research reports that SS-31 associates with cardiolipin, a lipid that organises the inner mitochondrial membrane and the protein complexes of the electron transport chain.
Preclinical studies examine markers of mitochondrial efficiency and oxidative stress. The compound has also been investigated in clinical trials run by its developer; we point researchers to the primary publications and registries rather than summarising outcomes.
All of the above is research context. SS-31 supplied by Midas is for laboratory research use only and is not for human consumption.
